Eight Year of Sobriety
Earlier this week, Sia took to twitter to celebrate the eighth year of her sobriety. She shared an encouraging message with her fans struggling with any form of addiction. She expressed her love for the fans and encouraged them to keep going.
The 42-year old singer who is ordinarily a private person has surprisingly been outspoken about her addiction issue. According to her, her struggle with addiction was the major inspiration for her hit song, Chandelier.
While speaking to a media outlet in 2013, she said that all she really wanted was to write songs for pop stars but that didn’t happen for her. She added that she got severely addicted to Oxycodone and Vicodin and was a perpetual drinker but she didn’t realize she had become an alcoholic. She stated then that she was unhappy as an artist and was becoming sicker. The singer also attributed her popular face-concealing wig to her addiction struggle.
A media outlet previously wrote that recovery is a different phase for people, but the only similar feature is that it has its upsides and downsides. According to them, that is the reason why an honest acknowledgment of both the upsides and the downsides support system is important.
It will be recalled that she tweeted similar messages in 2015 and the year 2016 when she marked the fifth and sixth year of her sobriety. She appreciated those who had contributed consciously or unconsciously to her sobriety. For the year 2015, she appreciated her fans and added that achieving sobriety isn’t an easy feat but the hard work was worth it. She is planning the release of a new album with Labrinth and Diplo with LSD as their group name.
Mac Miller’s Death
Sia’s post comes a few days after the demise of Mac Miller. Miller battled with drug problems prior to his demise on the 7th of September 2018 at the age of 26. The rapper’s death has prompted different celebrities such as J.Cole and French Montana to admonish others who may be suffering from substance abuse or depression to talk to their family and friends about it before things get out of hand.
Macklemore also joined other celebrities to echo this message in his tribute to the late rapper. Macklemore referred to Miller as a genuine human and added that Miller was his close ally concerning his own drug issues.
He added that Miller reached out to him when other people didn’t. He further encouraged other addicts to be more open about their addiction and take steps so they can save themselves. He encouraged people to join 12-step meetings where they would be welcome by other people who have a similar addiction.
